Warner Bros. releases Don Juan, its first Vitaphone release.

The inaugural Venice Film Festival opens. The Sin of Madelon Claudet is named Most Touching Film.
1959:
Famed comedy director Preston Sturges dies of a heart attack in New York, New York
2003:
Arnold Schwarzenegger announces on the Tonight Show that he will run for governor of California in a recall election against Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger ultimately wins the election on October 7.
