Opening in New York on the 24th, High Noon premieres in Sweden. An allegory for the Hollywood blacklisting of the '50s, the film wins star Gary Cooper his second Best Actor Academy Award, and brings Grace Kelly to the screen in a notable role for the first time. It reportedly cost a mere $730,000 to produce.

1973:

Veronica Lake dies of hepatitis in Burlington, Vermont.
