Wuthering Heights opens. The Goldwyn picture earns eight Oscar nominations, though only wins one (Best Cinematography, Black-and-White).

1964:

Sidney Poitier wins the Best Actor Oscar for Lilies of the Field. Poitier becomes the first African-American to win a lead acting Oscar.
