Director Joseph L. Mankiewicz (All About Eve, Cleopatra) is born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Mankiewicz won the Academy Award for directing twice.

1948:

Presentation of the Supreme Court case US vs. Paramount concludes. In the ruling handed down May 3rd of that year, the Court stated that movie studios had to divest themselves of the theatres which they owned.
