1933:
Twenty-one prominent actors, including Jeanette MacDonald, Groucho Marx, James Cagney and Gary Cooper, resign from the Motion Picture Academy in protest over treatment of actors by studios and producers. The walkout was an important event in the strengthening of the fledgling Screen Actors Guild.

F. Murray Abraham, Academy Award winner for his role in Amadeus, is born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
2003:
Scary Movie 3 is released, setting the mark for October openers with an astounding $49.7 million in its opening weekend. Miramax/Dimension releases the film at a super-wide 3,503 venues, easily the biggest venue count ever for the month of October, and the David Zucker-helmed parody fest had a venue average of $14,188.
