2004 BOP Reader Awards Results:
Best Actress
Sometimes two high-profile roles in a single year are a bad thing; one performance can siphon off votes from another when awards season comes around the bend. This year, that didn't stop BOP readers from naming Kate Winslet as best actress by a 35% margin over Hilary Swank. Winslet won for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and also finished 12th for Finding Neverland. Perhaps more impacted by the dual role phenomenon was Natalie Portman, who received split support for her work in Garden State and Closer, finishing in both fifth and sixth place. If her points were combined she would have finished second. BOP's girlfriend Audrey Tautou finished just out of the running for her work in A Very Long Engagement.
Cate Blanchett was the highest scoring supporting actress, finishing fourth (she finished second in The Calvins) while the Calvins winner, Virginia Madsen, was less popular with readers, finishing eighth for Sideways.
BOP readers agreed with BOP staffers in recognizing Kate Winslet as the best actress of 2004. In fact, our top selections are fairly similar, with the exception of Hilary Swank (we had her in sixth place).
