This is So Last Week,
our pop culture week-in-review,
presented in a pleasing quiz form.
Chris Rock has twice turned down offers to host the Academy Awards telecast. Rock was reportedly thrilled to be asked, but doesn't feel he's old enough to take charge of the venerable broadcast. According to Rock, "You do the Oscars when you're old." The comic went on to say, "There's nowhere to go from there. You should just retire and play afternoon shows at Lake Tahoe." This is something we all wish Whoopi Goldberg would do next time AMPAS asks.

Will Smith has categorically stated that reports that a sequel to Independence Day is in the works are inaccurate. Smith said, "I think that will never happen. It's Hollywood so you never know, you can never say never, but I'm pretty sure that will never happen." Will is, however, enthusiastic about his role of a technophobic policeman in I, Robot. "It's beautiful," he says of the part. "The technology is pushed slightly ahead of the technology that (author Isaac Asimov) had envisioned with his robots. I play a detective who is investigating the first robot-on-human murder." Suspect #1? Al Gore.

Sharon Stone may play the villain opposite Halle Berry in the upcoming
Catwoman film. If Stone signs, she would play Laurel, who is both the face
of a cosmetics company as well as the brains behind an evil operation she
runs with her husband. The film will reportedly receive the subtitle Clash of the Egos.

Brad Pitt has found his Mrs Smith, as reports have Angelina Jolie signing to
star opposite Pitt in the film Mr and Mrs Smith. The thriller, about a
married couple who moonlight as assassins and discover they have been hired
to kill each other, nearly fell apart recently due to problems casting the
distaff side of the title. However, with the signing of Jolie, the two
actors are working out scheduling so that filming begins in the fall. That
sound you hear is Billy Bob Thornton digging a deep, deep hole in case Jolie
decides to go the Method route with this one.

Richard Gere's next film, Emperor Zehnder, has been delayed for a year due
to the weather and some birds. Actually, the film was scheduled to go on
location in Antarctica in October, but now looks to miss that date. Given
that that time of year is what passes for spring at the South Pole and the
technical nature of the shoot, including some underwater footage of
penguins, makes a later start date too risky, so the film has been shelved
for now. There was also reportedly some concern that Gere was planning to show the crew a "special trick" with the penguins, but that's just a rumor...isn't it?

Given the mediocre domestic performance of the Tomb Raider sequel, one
wouldn't think a another outing in the franchise would even be under
consideration. But with the film finding new life overseas, there is some
interest in a third film. However, the actress who plays Lara Croft may
have put the kibosh on there being a Tomb Raider 3, stating recently that
she wasn't sure she wanted to do another one. Angelina Jolie said, "They do
take a lot of time away from home and I'm very happy with the second one, so
I'm not sure I'll need to do another." Good. Jolie needs to concentrate on films that feature hard core nudity.
