The spirit of BOP News lives on in
This is So Last Week,
our pop culture week-in-review,
presented in a pleasing quiz form.

20th Century Fox Animation has optioned the rights to the children’s book Wainscott Weasel, to be produced in conjunction with Blue Sky Studios, the people behind the 3-D animated hit Ice Age. The book focuses on an interspecies love story between critters who live in Wainscott Woods, Long Island, and follows the adventures of Bagley Brown, Jr, an eye-patch-wearing weasel and his friend Bridget, a bass who lives in a nearby pond. Bagley must ride to Bridget’s rescue when the pond in which she lives is endangered by a drought and a hungry osprey. A number of top agents were being considered to voice the weasel until casting directors realized the word “heroic” was part of the character description. You want an agent to play me? I’ll sic the ASPCA on you.

So what’s the male equivalent of doing a nude spread in Playboy? The news just gets worse for Demi Moore’s boy-toy. It was widely reported recently that Ashton Kutcher had to drop out of Cameron Crowe’s upcoming film Elizabethtown due to rescheduling of the film’s production start, claiming it clashed with his TV commitments. But some insiders close to the production are saying Crowe actually ousted Kutcher because he was dissatisfied with the That ‘70s Show star’s acting. Some reports even have Crowe suggesting that Kutcher take acting lessons. Steven Soderbergh also recently passed on having Kutcher as part of the cast for one of his upcoming productions due to concerns over Kutcher’s professionalism. Looks as if Demi may soon not be the only one in need of a comeback film.
Tim Allen seems to be staking his continued career success on Christmas. At least, that’s the impression one gets on hearing news that Revolution Studios has cast the Santa Clause star in the comedy Skipping Christmas. The film is based on a John Grisham novel - yes, we think seeing the words “comedy” and “John Grisham” in the same sentence is strange, too - about a man who decides to forego Christmas and all its trappings and just go on vacation with his wife. His plans are thrown into disarray, however, when his daughter decides to come home for the holiday, and he finds himself having to put together a Christmas celebration at the last minute. In keeping with most film adaptations of Grisham novels, however, the project will be overlong, the storyline will meander, and the audience will be able to figure out the entire plot five minutes after the opening credits roll. Wait, a John Grisham novel? I thought this film was supposed to be funny.
Ladies, the doctor is most definitely in. Columbia is producing the rom-com Last First Kiss, starring Will Smith and Eva Mendes. The film follows the story of a date doctor who claims to have developed a method of matching people with their soul mates within the first three dates. A beautiful female journalist decides to enroll in the doctor’s program in order to expose him as a fraud. And for all three of our readers who’ve never seen a romantic comedy, we’ll refrain from giving any hint whatsoever as to how that works out for her.
Vin Diesel’s funny? Well, Disney sure hopes so, as it’s just teamed up with Spyglass Entertainment for the action-comedy The Pacifier, in which Diesel will star. The film focuses on an undercover agent who fails to protect a VIP government scientist, then learns that the man’s family is in danger. We’re laughing already. The agent decides his road to redemption lies in caring for the scientist’s family, and hilarity, everyone hopes and prays, ensues. If the project proves to be a box-office success, Disney will commission a sequel for which Vin Diesel will refuse to reprise his role. The studio will then replace Diesel with Paul Walker. Or Ice Cube. Or both. Take your pick. Laugh or I’ll break your face.

"Hey, look at that. Dinner and a show."
