This is So Last Week,
our pop culture week-in-review,
presented in a pleasing quiz form.

As surely Father Time turns to Baby New Year at 12:01am each and every January 1st, so do lists of the best and worst you-name-it bombard us from every media outfit one can imagine, and a few one never would. Most of the lists are based around pedestrian ideas, such as -dressed or movies, but occasionally one pops up that is fairly unique, such as Empire magazine’s Most Irritating Actor in Movies list. The British film monthly’s readers’ poll unsurprisingly voted Tom Cruise as the most irritating actor in 2005, beating out such competition as Jennifer Lopez and Julia Roberts, although it’s hard to believe Mr Jump-on-Oprah’s-Couch “You don’t know psychology, I do” had any competition whatsoever. And just to show how fickle the moviegoing public can be, Empire’s readers also voted Cruise Favorite Actor of 2005. An Empire spokesperson, probably mindful of how litigious the diminutive actor can be when he doesn’t like what’s said about him, offered the theory that the magazine’s readers likely voted Cruise most irritating as a “knee-jerk reaction to his year in the spotlight”. We’re just wondering how much it cost Cruise to buy that Favorite Actor nod. You don’t know irritating. I do.

At least they shone a flattering light through the meal-hole. And as an example of that tendency to sue first and ask questions later, our friends across the pond won’t be treated to an episode of South Park that made fun of questions regarding Cruise’s sexuality, thanks to pressure from the star. The episode, which had Nicole Kidman and John Travolta trying to coax Cruise out of a closet where he met with Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard, caused quite a stir when it was aired in the States. According to a British Web site, Cruise complained to Paramount, the studio that distributed the South Park movie and whose home video division distributes the DVDs, and the studio suits, who probably want Cruise to star in one of their pictures again, agreed to pull the plug on any rebroadcasts of the episode. Looks like Cruise is going for that Most Irritating Actor title again this year and making sure getting the Favorite nod doesn’t dilute it.
You have to have some big cajones to tell Steven Spielberg and George Lucas to hurry it up, already, but if anyone has that kind of clout, it’s Harrison Ford. A fourth installment of the Indiana Jones series has been in the works for...ever, and Ford has now set a time limit on how much longer the project should stay in limbo. The 63-year-old actor has been quoted as saying prospects for a new Indy adventure are “looking very good” and he hasn’t felt as positive that it will finally happen in quite some time. However, Ford went on to say that if the project doesn’t get before cameras within the next two years, “we should all forget it”. Since production is scheduled to begin next year, Ford’s stop date likely won’t come into play; then again, rumors have had the film going before cameras several times in the past few years. It’s understandable that, at his age, Ford would want the film to be made before he gets too much older, although following the exploits of Indy using a walker might be pretty funny. Maybe the South Park lads would like a shot at that. Harrison Ford isn’t nearly as touchy as Tom Cruise. Yeah, much more craggy and they could double him for Mount Rushmore.

"That movie has warped my fragile little mind."
