This is So Last Week,
our pop culture week-in-review,
presented in a pleasing quiz form.

We all thought it was overweening ego, but apparently Rob Lowe left The West Wing because he felt Aaron Sorkin didn’t love him enough. Lowe, whose new series The Lyon’s Den recently premiered, told TV Guide that he felt slighted by Sorkin when the size of his role was pared down, and he wasn’t making as much money as Martin Sheen, who portrays the President of the United States in the series. Lowe was quoted in the story as saying, “Why didn't he know how much I loved him, how much I loved that show? Why didn't he love me like I loved him? It's weird, considering it's another man, but that's as close as I can put it." Lowe also felt he had been spied on when producers brought to his attention the fact he’d been late to the set a goodly number of times. Perhaps Lowe shouldn’t get quite so emotionally involved, because the last time we recall hearing he felt unloved and spied upon, a very interesting video made the rounds. “Seriously, Mr President, if you want some tips on handling a threesome...”

“No, Sam, I’ve never kissed a man. Why do you ask?” There is disharmony in Middle Earth. It seems Elijah Wood, portrayer of heroic Hobbit Frodo, was under the impression that he was given the one Ring used in the film trilogy, and was incensed to learn that Andy Serkis, who played Gollum, was also presented with a replica of the fabled jewelry. And in a rather bizarre case of life imitating art, Frodo and Gollum are set to square off over the eponymous band of gold, apparently having bought into that whole story that there can only be one. In a related story, all of the Hobbits were allowed to keep their fake film feet, but none of them have gotten laid since production on the first film started.
There’s some feudin’ and a-fightin’ going on in the world of funny, with accusations flying that, shock of shocks, comedians sometimes steal jokes from one another. The latest round involves charges from Fear Factor host Joe Rogan that Denis Leary and Robin Williams stole jokes from late comedian Bill Hicks. Although Williams didn’t bother with Rogan’s ramblings, Leary suggested that if Joe paid as much attention to his own career as he did to that of others, he might get a job that didn’t involve making people eat gross things on national TV. We think the funniest thing we’ve ever heard from Joe Rogan is the use of the word “comedian” in connection with his name. On my show, “shit-eating grin” isn’t a metaphor.
“They can take away my life, but they can’t take away my franchise!” Well, well, well; seems Mel Gibson’s upcoming train wreck-in-the-making The Passion is being avoided like stock in Martha Stewart, as earlier reports that several studios were interested in distributing it seem to have been, shall we say, optimistic. Given the controversy already surrounding the film, most studios are predicting popularity and business to be more along the lines of The Last Temptation of Christ than Titanic, and the oft-mentioned decision by Gibson to not provide subtitles for the ancient Aramaic in which the film was shot isn’t helping matters. One studio head stated, "It's not worth the aggravation," while another believes the film will be used as "a political football." To add to the problems, recent profiles of the star, which included some rather inflammatory statements regarding Gibson’s religious beliefs, have begun to damage the star’s reputation. One top producer even indicated that many in the industry are beginning to see Gibson as being as loony as his Lethal Weapon character. Which ironically may have given scriptwriters the plotline for Lethal Weapon V.

"Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?"
