This is So Last Week,
our pop culture week-in-review,
presented in a pleasing quiz form.

Peter Berg has signed on to direct The Kingdom for Universal Studios. The Friday Night Lights and The Rundown director, whose last two films have been very well received, pitched the idea with the project’s producer Michael Mann, who will be helming Miami Vice at roughly the same time he’ll be producing this project. The story will surround a group of US government officials working with a Middle East government to investigate a bombing. Universal is denying that the object of the investigation is The Chronicles of Riddick. Check him out in The Last Seduction

This is not a picture of Michael Ovitz Sam Raimi’s Ghost House pictures has greenlit a big-screen adaptation of the graphic novel 30 Days of Night. The comic book originally published by IDW became a cult hit due to its premise. Steve Niles, writer and co-creator of the series, will write the screenplay for the film, which focuses on Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost town in the United States. Due to its location, the town experiences 30 straight days without seeing the light of day, a fact that brings out spooky vampires in droves. The series was co-created by artist Ben Templesmith, who will not participate in the project other than raking in the cash when it is finally released. Niles will reportedly write a twist for an ending where the townspeople escape Barrow and flee to Canada, where the vampires are so polite, they take the 30 days off.
Revolution Studios is so desperate to get the original theatrical cast of Rent on board the big-screen version that they are quite possibly jeopardizing their original target release date of Holiday 2005. The studio is said to be willing to work around the schedule of the stars to ensure that they all agree to reprise their roles from the original hit play. The studio has my vote to put the project on indefinite suspension. Do you really need to ask why?
