The spirit of BOP News lives on in
This is So Last Week,
our pop culture week-in-review,
presented in a pleasing quiz form.

Los Angeles Confidential magazine has quoted Pierce Brosnan as refuting his own previous statements made to Entertainment Weekly with regards to his status as the the British super-spy. Brosnan told the magazine that his previous talk with EW was not an official announcement and that the reporter that quoted him misheard the Irish actor who had actually said that “..he was done talking about Bond.” The reporter, according to Brosnan, had not heard the “talking” part of Brosnan’s proclamation. We here at BOP, however, will make sure this is clear: We won’t be talking about Bond any more until we hear something from MGM or if Barbara Broccoli gives us a call personally. The latest person rumored to be the next Bond...a no-prize to whoever can name him

Bill Parwho? Speaking of MGM, Sony has now re-upped its offer to buy the studio that has been running on fumes recently. Sony made an initial bid that was not successful but now have reportedly sweetened the pot. Competing with Sony are Time Warner, who owns Warner Bros. Studios. While MGM is one of the oldest studios in Hollywood, it has recently been struggling to keep up with the big boys. As the studio continues to struggle to find hits, it maintains a solid franchise with James Bond, the property which continually saves the studio’s butt. In addition to the 007 franchise, MGM owns an extremely large movie vault with many Hollywood classics. While the studio has done very little to take advantage of these properties, the purchasing studios are likely after the potential inherent within these films. For you folks still hung over on NFL kick-off weekend, this is like Daniel Snyder hiring Joe Gibbs.
The Toronto International Film Festival began in earnest late last week with David O. Russell’s I (heart) Huckabee’s receiving the early attention. Starring Mark Wahlberg, Lily Tomlin, and Dustin Hoffman, the film was met with excellent reviews and will likely be remembered during voting for the festival’s People’s Choice Award as best film. Previous winners at the festival include Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, American Beauty, Life is Beautiful and Shine. The festival continues through the week, ending on Sunday with a gala event. The festival will be taking an unofficial break when Canada plays Finland in the finals of the World Cup of Hockey. For our American readers who are a little confused...Yes, it's ICE hockey
