Someone at Regal Cinemas has a big pair of brass cajones; completely ignoring Mel Gibson’s threats to “call in some favors”, Regal is allegedly reneging on a deal to pay Icon Pictures, Mel Gibson’s production company which solely financed the making of The Passion of the Christ, 55% of said film’s box office revenue. Icon makes the allegations in a lawsuit in which the company contests that Regal has offered a 34% cut instead of the 55%. The basis of the suit is an e-mail exchanged between a Regal exec and an exec from Newmarket Entertainment, the film’s distributor, in which the two parties agreed on “studio terms” and a “studio deal”. Icon alleges that the wording indicates that the division of the money would follow a 55/45 ratio which is the norm for “studio deals”. The result of the discrepancy in what was allegedly agreed to and what Regal is offering is a $40 million lawsuit by Icon Productions. We’re a coupla beheadings away from repeating King James history here. Wives of Regal Cinemas execs beware. Mine was a very different kind of passion. One filled with lots of WOOF!!

Peter Jackson made New Line so much money, they’re pretty much covered for the next 28 years From the useless sequel film, New Line Cinema has given the go-ahead for a second sequel to Final Destination, AKA New and Inventive Ways to Kill People On-Screen. With the second sequel, New Line is going back to the original creators of the series, James Wong and Glen Morgan. Morgan and Wong co-wrote the original film with Morgan also wearing the director’s hat. The second film was directed by David R. Ellis and while both films cost only $25 million to make, the sequel made more 22% less at the box office than the original film did. You’d think with this franchise, New Line would come up with a new, original and creative way to kill a movie franchise. Instead, it’s just the same old same old.
The Fountain has finally settled and all you Darren Aronofsky fans, all 17 of you, can rejoice. The long-in-limbo project seems to have settled on a firm production begin date. The film about 3 different stories surrounding the search for immortality is set to go into production on November 1st with Hugh Jackman in the lead role. The project once had Brad Pitt attached and has been floating around Hollywood for along time with Aronofsky finding challenges in his schedule as well as finding a lead star. With this announcement, the world will finally see the follow up to Aronofsky’s disturbing Requiem for a Dream, the critically acclaimed film about drug addiction. Jackman will finish his Tony award winning run as the lead in The Boy from Oz on September 12th and will directly head into pre-production on The Fountain which is set to be shot in Montreal. This announcement squashes earlier rumors that the film was delayed due to Aronofsky’s attempt to raise a bigger budget for the project by repeatedly selling his mother’s television set. This is a) Clint Eastwood b) Hugh Jackman c) Toni Kukoc d) a sign you’re watching a shitty movie
