The spirit of BOP News lives on in
This is So Last Week,
our pop culture week-in-review,
presented in a pleasing quiz form.

It's nice to know that being rich and famous doesn't make you any less prone to bonehead moves in the romance department than the with the hoi polloi. Penélope Cruz is reportedly trying to win back former beau Tom Cruise by bombarding him with emotional phone calls since their split in January. Sources close to Penélope say she isn't ready to give up on getting Cruise back and believes that reaching out and touching Cruise will rekindle their romance in the near future. Aw, how...stalker of her. We've got the over/under on the restraining order at mid-June. *

We hear she also handles divorces. And in more Stupid Celebrity Romance Tricks, Uma Thurman is reportedly engaged to her new beau thanks to advice she received from Angelina Jolie. Jolie, whose acrimonious split with former husband Billy Bob Thornton was the stuff of headlines for months, commiserated with Uma, who recently split from husband Ethan Hawke, over drinks when the two met at Cannes. After Uma reportedly revealed that her newest love, hotelier Andre Balazs, had proposed, Angelina purportedly told the Kill Bill star to forget about the past and grab happiness with both hands. Uma allegedly took this advice to heart and told Balazs she will marry him. Far be it from us to throw further obstacles in the path of true romance, but we would like to remind Uma that she's taking relationship advice from Angelina Jolie. She might want to take that advice with the proverbial grain of salt. Hell, make that an entire salt lick.
Well, we knew smoking was hazardous to your health, but judging from a recent report, it can be nearly as hazardous starring in a film with the word "cigarettes" in the title. Kate Winslet and James Gandolfini discovered some of the more unusual pitfalls of smoking recently on the set of their new film, Romance & Cigarettes. The pair were filming a fantasy sequence where Gandolfini dreams of becoming a firefighter and rescuing Winslet from a burning building. Special effects being used in the scene caught on a beam in the abandoned building where shooting was taking place and set it ablaze. Fortunately for the cast and crew, the fantasy sequence called for a group of firefighters to serenade Winslet, and the group of off-duty New York City firefighters on hand for that assignment quickly set about dousing the flames. They had an unlikely assistant in Steve Buscemi, also cast in the film, who apparently was a fireman before pursuing an acting career. We're just amused to hear of Buscemi's heretofore unknown talent, and we're picturing Buscemi in turnouts. It is not a pretty picture. He was a firefighter? Bwhahahahaha!.
We refuse to reveal who wrote this item on the grounds he might hurt us. Firebrand actor Sean Penn recently slammed the movie industry for not making enough films about politics. The combative Mystic River star, who made a controversial trip to Iraq last year as a protest against the war, lashed out at studio execs during an interview at Cannes to promote his upcoming film, The Assassination of Richard Nixon. Penn feels that the lack of serious political films being greenlighted in Hollywood proves that he industry is out of touch with the major issues facing the world today. Penn also expressed the belief that his outspoken political stands, especially his opposition to the war in Iraq, are costing him film roles. Which begs the question why he's continuing to flap his gums, but we don't have the credentials to try and figure out how Penn's brain works.
