Also of note was that the Directors Guild rewarded Cartel Land over Amy as the Best Documentary. This leads to some intrigue in the Oscar race but only barely. Cartel Land was a daring directorial feat without question. The director filmed during intense shootout scenes both in Mexico and in Arizona near the border. Amy, by contrast, seems like a cut and paste procedural by contrast. Still, Amy has the far more recognizable subject matter and a more sympathetic figure than the much more unlikeable vigilantes featured in Cartel Land. I still think Amy will fin.

Finally, the Annie animators’ guild also gave out their awards on Saturday. Surprising no one, they showered Inside Out with praise - 10 awards total, including Best Feature. I’ve not updated the Animated Feature power rankings and I won’t - but here you have them anyway.

The Annies also named the Day of Tomorrow as the Best Animated Short, giving that movie a boost in that category to be sure.

What’s Next?

Well, with little under three weeks left, and with voting just about to start, Academy members sure have a lot to dig into. The British Oscars, BAFTA, will be announced on Sunday, and may or may not provide some clarity. About 500 of their members are also Academy members. Still, they stuck to Boyhood last year despite the fact that it was clear that the Birdman train was unstoppable. But BAFTA will surely reward one of The Big Short, The Revenant or Spotlight for Best Picture (the other two nominees are Carol and Bridge of Spies). In the Director race, Spotlight showed some sign of weakness by missing there, with his slot going to Ridley Scott. The WGA will also announce next weekend.

I’m going to give up on trying to predict at the next guild for now. For now, we wait and see.

I’ll cover the BAFTA as usual: Twitter and Instagram.
