While the big battle at the US box office this weekend was between Mad Max: Fury Road and Pitch Perfect 2, internationally both films were still operating in the shadow of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Once again, Avengers: Age of Ultron reigned supreme internationally, thanks largely to a huge debut in China, where the film has earned more than $150 million since opening mid-week. Its total for this weekend for all territories was $185 million, which pushed its international total to $770.5 million, and its global one to $1.14 billion. At its current pace, it should surpass the $1.52 billion the first film earned in a couple of weeks.

Mad Max: Fury Road is a distant but promising second this weekend as the fairly pricey, long-delayed sequel/reboot earned $65 million in its first frame. It’s hard to gauge where the film will end up at this point, partly because it’s unclear how well-known the franchise is worldwide and because it stars Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, neither of whom have huge international followings on their own, but the largely dialogue-free nature of the film, coupled with the emphasis on its spectacular action, should help it to make a decent showing, even against its hefty $150-200 million price tag.

Pitch Perfect 2, meanwhile, has no worries when it comes to recouping its budget since it already doubled it during its US debut. Not too shabby. Internationally, the sequel earned $26.9 million this weekend which, when added to its earnings from a few territories last week, gives it a running total of $38.1 million. For the sake of comparison, the first Pitch Perfect earned only $50.3 million overseas back in 2012, and had a final global total of $115.4 million. Number two currently has $108.4 million, so it’s fair to say that this one will do just a touch better than the original.

Furious 7 is starting to slow down, as it earned $6.6 million and lands in fourth place this weekend. That brings its overseas total to a monstrous $1.145 billion, and its global total to $1.489 billion, good for fourth place all time. It should just manage to overtake the original Avengers for third place in a few weeks, assuming that Age of Ultron doesn’t get there first.

Chronicles of Evil, a South Korean thriller about a detective who kills a man in self-defense, then tries to cover up the crime even as he is assigned to investigate it, rounds out the top five this week with a solid gross of $6.3 million.

Home, the DreamWorks alien movie, continues to hang around in sixth place this weekend as it added $4.5 million for a new total of $185.5 million. That pushed the global total for the film to $351.1 million, which is perfectly respectable, but does reinforce the idea that this is a fairly middling result for a typically expensive DreamWorks offering since Home never broke out in the way that previous films from the studio have.

Disney’s Cinderella, another perennial favorite, also manages another weekend in the top ten. It added $3.3 million, bringing its international total to $323.8 million, and its worldwide total to $521 million, which is a very good result for the modestly budgeted (by Disney standards) fairytale.

Eighth this weekend is Ostwind 2, a sequel to a German film about a young girl who forms a special bond with a horse. It earned $2 million.

The Age of Adaline, which I’m assured you can see without having seen The Age of Ultron, is ninth this weekend as the Blake Lively fantasy earned $1.5 million. Similarly to how it has performed in the US, The Age of Adaline has been a pretty quiet film that hasn’t made a huge splash, but has managed a pretty respectable $11 million so far from only a few territories.

Finally this week we have Far From the Madding Crowd. The movie based on a novel by The Other Tom Hardy has been performing pretty well in limited release in the US, success which follows a very solid overseas run which has seen the film earn $8 million to date.
