After this weekend at the box office, looking to Monday and expecting any big surprises can only end in sadness. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes continues to lead the way, adding $4.2 million to its total on Monday, meaning it has led the box office for 10 of the 11 days it has been in theaters, only taken over by The Purge: Anarchy on Friday. This is a pattern that will continue the rest of the week until we get some legit new blood on Friday in the form of The Rock and Scarlett Johansson. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is at $143.4 million as of Monday. Rise of the Planet of the Apes was at $108.7 million at the same point, so this is still a solid improvement from film one to film two and $200 million is still in play provided it holds well this weekend.

The weekend’s best performer, The Purge: Anarchy, came in with $3.2 million on Monday. Looking to last year’s The Purge, that came in with a nearly identical $3.3 million after a $34 million breakout weekend. Considering the sequel gave back $5 million on opening weekend as compared to the first entry, that’s a win for Anarchy. Of course, anything it earns from here on out is gravy as it only had a $9 million production budget, so even if it follows The Purge’s trajectory and crashes with $60 million total, it’s hard to say anything bad about this performance.

Performances we can say bad things about include other weekend openers Sex Tape and Planes: Fire and Rescue. The tired looking comedy and blatant cash grab sequel earned $1.5 million and $1.8 million on Monday, respectively. Neither will be a significant box office factor beyond this week, and while the future is considerably rosier for Planes given it’ll still sell a bunch of DVDs and ostensibly some toys, Sex Tape stands to not reach its $40 production budget as Monday’s box office brings it to a mere $16.1 million so far. But I still like you, Jason Segel.

Beyond that there is nothing interesting in looking at the daily box office figures, which has been the case for much of the summer. The only notable thing that will occur sometime this week is Trans4mers surpassing Maleficent for fourth place among 2014 box office (they are about $600,000 apart after Monday) and then X-Men Days of Future Past for the bronze medal, which will probably happen Thursday. It’s still going to be the worst performer of the franchise, by as much as $70 million.
