People, let me tell you 'bout my best friend...

Spider-Man: Homecoming

With a $50.5 million Friday, it is indeed a homecoming for the franchise responsible for the first ever $100 million weekend. The third reboot of Spider-Man and first to officially be a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Homecoming was rewarded with an opening weekend that’s going to top the opening of both Amazing Spider-Man films.

Homecoming got out to a strong start with Thursday night showings (included in the Friday figure) taking in $15.4 million, a number only behind Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Beauty and the Beast in 2017. The Marvel influence and strong reviews have turned a floundering franchise into one of the biggest successes of the year.

With a true Friday take of $35.1 million, Homecoming is set to be the fourth $100 million opening weekend of 2017 (and 46th of all time; we’ve come a long way in 15 years), as a huge Saturday propels it to a weekend $117.2 million.

Despicable Me 3

Last week’s winner Despicable Me 3 is down 60% from last Friday to $11.3 million. That’s not terrible surprising considering the sequel fatigue that’s set in here. Minions 2 had better hope it's on the fast track. DM3 is going to have a decent weekend, though, sending it to a $38 million weekend as it rapidly approaches the $200 million mark.

The Big Sick

Kumail Nanjiani’s indie romantic comedy expands to 326 theaters and is able to take advantage of a weak lower half of the box office chart and place eighth on Friday with $1.1 million. One of the best reviewed movies of the year, it will likely see some more expansion in the next couple of weeks after a weekend of $3.5 million.
