The last time Halloween fell on a Saturday, it was 2009 and the only new release was Michael Jackson’s This Is It, which had opened Wednesday. That performed admirably, with $23.2 million on the weekend and $34.4 million over five days for the concert film/documentary/curiosity.
Friday Box Office Analysis

This year, with the, uh, specter of Spectre looming next weekend, they didn’t even try.
Bradley Cooper’s Burnt gets chopped with only $1.8 million on Friday. To add insult to injury, since Halloween is traditionally a bad box office day (unless you’re a horror film), Friday is somewhat inflated as people go to the movies then instead of on Saturday. That means Burnt is definitely toast over the rest of the weekend as it will finish with just $4.8 million.
Our Brand Is Crisis
Sandra Bullock will have the biggest flop of her career with Our Brand Is Crisis, after a $1.1 million Friday. Yes, that’s even worse than All About Steve. And unlike after that one, there isn't another Blind Side immediately around the corner. A weekend of $2.8 million is pretty laughable.
Scout's Guide to the Zombie Universe
This movie, sort of targeted to kids but not really, barely even registered on Friday with $708,000 from just over 1,500 venues. It will do even worse over the remainder of the weekend and is barely even worth talking about.
The abysmal performance by the new releases in the last two weeks gives The Martian another its fourth weekend on top in five weeks, as it’s down just 21% from last Friday, adding another $3.5 million to its total. The Martian joins Furious 7 as the only movies to have a four week stay at #1, and you have to go back to last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy to find a movie that finished on top in its fifth weekend or later (it would also win its sixth weekend). Goosebumps is not far behind on Friday, but will have a terrible Saturday as the target audience is out trick-or-treating. The Martian hangs on for a weekend of $11.2 million.
