Friday Box Office Analysis

Disney’s live-action Cinderella adaptation scored a strong $23 million on Friday. With live-action retellings of classic stories seemingly a yearly thing now, the one I like as the best comparison (over Alice in Wonderland and last year’s Maleficent) is 2013’s Oz the Great and Powerful, which started with a $24 million Friday and finished with a $79 million weekend. Though Cinderella is skewing slightly older than Oz, that Frozen short is probably good for a few bucks. I’m looking for it to win the weekend in style with $74.8 million.
Run All Night
Liam Neeson’s latest thriller, Run All Night, can only earn $3.9 million on Friday. Neeson’s run as an action star might be just about over as Taken has run its course and audiences haven’t responded to any of his recent efforts in that vein, between this and A Walk Among the Tombstones. A weekend of $10.6 million will be its fate here, good for second on the weekend, but that’s not really saying a whole lot.
Notable Holdovers
Last weekend’s winner, Chappie, collapses 66% from last Friday to $1.5 million. One of the larger flops of the year already, director Neill Blomkamp apparently still has an Alien sequel in the works, but at this point he is going to go down as a one-trick pony. Call it $4.5 million on the weekend.
