Fabulously wealthy.

New movies are released into theaters every weekend. How do you decide which movie to watch? Some people could pick a movie based on the title (Surprisingly, 500 Days of Summer, 40 Days and 40 Nights, Six Days and Seven Nights, and The Next Three Days all have different genres). Some people watch trailers (misleading), some people listen to their friends (friends can be idiots), and some people only go to the movies if their Hollywood crush is on the screen (My alphabetical actress crush list...W is for Emma Watson).

More likely than not, each weekend there is a movie that you have never heard of in the theaters. I'll save you the hassle of researching every movie, by comparing the new releases for each weekend in this column. Then, I'll tell you which movie to watch.

For the weekend of December 14th, the only new movie in wide release is The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. I don’t know what else to do in this column, it’s the second week where only one movie was released! Maybe I’ll give you a preview of seven other films you may want to watch this holiday season.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected JourneySeven films to watch after you watch The Hobbit.
Clearest TitleThe Hobbit is one of the most famous books of all time. But I don’t remember that subtitle. #7: Les Miserables - a live action musical based on the Broadway show...supposed to be good.
Best Genre
and Rating
Adventure/Fantasy
Rated PG-13 for extended sequences of intense fantasy action violence, and frightening images.
#6: Zero Dark Thirty - hadn’t heard of this movie until all the award nominations started to happen. It's a movie about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.
Cleverest Tagline
(out of 5 stars)
From the director of The Lord of the Rings trilogy

0/5 - Not a tagline, but a good reason to see this movie
#5: Django Unchained - also in the award nominations this week, a Quentin Tarantino movie about slavery and vengeance.
Best Part of TrailerWell, it seems well done. Not as much action as I would have imagined, though. #4: Monsters, Inc. (3D): yes, this is a re-release of a classic in 3D, but you know it’s a guaranteed good time as opposed to any of the new releases.
Coolest Lead ActorMartin Freeman from Sherlock, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, and Hot Fuzz. #3: Life of Pi, Flight, Skyfall, and Wreck-It-Ralph have all been released and have all been awesome. Watch one of these if you haven’t yet.
Best CastIan McKellen (X-men)#2: Silver Linings Playbook: Two of my favorite actors: Bradley Cooper (Alias) and Jennifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) star in a dark/quirky romantic comedy that the critics like, too.
Best Street Cred
For the Production
Writer, Producer, and Director Peter Jackson has also done those three roles with The Lord of the Rings trilogy. #1: Or rent a film and have a popcorn and pajamas night with friends and family. Or better yet, skip the movie and just be together. Happy early holidays.

So out of a maximum of 7 points per movie, The Hobbit wins all seven points by default.

You may interpret this column for your own movie preferences. For example, if you aren’t going to watch any of the movies I mentioned in this column, feel free to read a book. However, if you are still on the fence, please read the following conclusions from the scientific data gathered in this column.

Conclusion 1: On paper, The Hobbit is the best movie to watch this weekend.
Conclusion 2: The BBC Sherlock is one of the best shows I have ever seen. Martin Freeman (Bilbo) plays Watson and Benedict Cumberbatch (voice of Smaug) plays Sherlock.
Conclusion 3: At least four movies are released next weekend. My column is ecstatic.
