This Weekend, Watch This

New movies are released into theaters every weekend. How do you decide which movie to watch? Some people could pick a movie based on the title (Surprisingly, Man on the Moon, Moonstruck, and New Moon all have different genres). Some people watch trailers (misleading), some people listen to their friends (friends can be idiots), and some people only go to the movies if their Hollywood crush is on the screen (It has been 1,558 days since I have been able to see Catherine Zeta-Jones on the big screen!).

More likely than not, each weekend there is a movie that you have never heard of in the theaters. I'll save you the hassle of researching every movie, by comparing the new releases for each weekend in this column. Then, I'll tell you which movie to watch.

For the weekend of October 28th, the movies in wide release are In Time, Puss in Boots, and The Rum Diary.



In Time Puss in Boots The Rum Diary WINNER (1 point per category)
Clearest TitleThis title offers no information for me. A famous cat created in the late 1600s, super popularized by Shrek. The same name as a book published in 1998. Today, and historically, Puss in Boots is the most recognizable name here. Point.
Best Genre
and Rating		SciFi Thriller:

Rated PG-13 for violence, some sexualty and partial nudity, and strong language 		Animation:

Rated PG for some adventure action and mild rude humor. 		Drama/Thriller:

Rated R for language, brief drug use, and some sexuality. 		Realistic. Science Fiction. Animation. All valid genres. 1/3 point for all!
Cleverest Tagline

Best Part of TrailerPlot seems ridiculous, but I surprisingly enjoyed the trailer. Little uncomfortable with the sensual animated cats, could have been funnier. Seems a little trippy. I didn't really get it. Out of the three trailers, I only have a slight urge to see more of The Rum Diary. Point.
Coolest Lead ActorJustin Timberlake from The Social Network and Friends with Benefits. The voice of Antonia Banderas from Desperado and The Mask of Zorro. Johnny Depp from Edward Scissorhands and the Pirates trilogy. Ladies weekend at the theaters! Antonio's voice is powerful, and Justin will win an Oscar some day, but for now Johnny Depp is the coolest actor. Point.
Best CastAmanda Seyfried (Mamma Mia!), Cillian Murphy (Inception), Alex Pettyfer (I am Number 4) Voices of Salma Hayek, Zach Galifianakis, Billy Bob Thornton, Amy Sedaris, and Guillermo del Toro Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), Amber Heard (Drive Angry) and Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight). The Rum Diary has the best live-action cast too. Point.
Best Street Cred
For the Production		Writer and Director Andrew Niccol has also written The Terminal and The Truman Show. Director Chris Miller has also directed Shrek the Third. Novelist Hunter S. Thompson also wrote the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas book. All three guys have a little street cred- they can all share this point.


So out of a maximum of 7 points per movie, The Rum Diary scores 4 and 1/6 points, Puss in Boots scores 2 and 1/6 points, and In Time scores 2/3 of a point.

You may interpret this column for your own movie preferences. For example, if you watched and enjoyed Friends with Benefits, feel free to watch In Time. However, if you are still on the fence, please read the following conclusions from the scientific data gathered in this column.

Conclusion 1: On paper, The Rum Diary is the best movie to watch this weekend.
Conclusion 2: Despite The Rum Diary being published in 1998, the author actually wrote it in the early 1960s.
Conclusion 3: The author of the Puss in Boots character also created the stories that went on to become the famous Mother Goose's Tales. Puss in Boots also appeared in Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty ballet and was a 1998 film starring Christopher Walken.
Conclusion 4: Happy Halloween!
