Friday Box Office Analysis

The best of the sorry bunch of Labor Day openers, All About Steve, earned $3.5 million on Friday. It probably only even earned that much because Sandra Bullock and Bradley Cooper are both coming off the biggest hits of their careers. And now they've each followed it up with one of the most critically savaged films of the year. A four day weekend of around $12.2 million seems to be in store here, but that may actually not be enough to win the weekend.
[tm:4489_]Gamer[/tm]
The action film can only muster $3.2 million. Last year at this time we had [bp:201_]Vin Diesel[/bp]'s Babylon A.D. which opened to $3.1 million and earned $11.5 million for the weekend, so we've got a pretty good idea for Gamer here. The best the Gerard Butler starrer can hope to earn is about $11.8 million.
[tm:4665_]Extract[/tm]
Mike Judge's Extract took in $1.3 million on Friday. Mike Judge should just eliminate the middle man and put his movies out directly on DVD, which is where this is more likely to find an audience. It's in for a four-day weekend of $4.7 million.
Notable Holdovers
Despite falling 67% from last Friday, [tm:4154_]The Final Destination[/tm] stays on top, just a few thousand dollars ahead of All About Steve. A second Friday of $3.6 million is just enough to stay in first. Last weekend's multiplier was 2.52, but that should improve a good deal, especially over the long Labor Day weekend. It's going to be close but I'm pretty sure The Final Destination gets a surprise second weekend at the top of the box office for The Final Destination, with a four-day total of $13.4 million.
The other film from last week's horror double feature, Rob Zombie's [tm:4814_]Halloween II[/tm] has an epic fall of 78% from last Friday to $1.7 million. Of note here is the film actually had a remarkably bad 2.14 weekend multiplier last week as after a decent Friday, it fell off fast. The long weekend should bring it to a $6.2 million weekend.
