An immensely powerful story that's anchored by two phenomenal performances
4. The Dark Knight
A menacing, haunting exploration of morality and humanity.
5. The Wrestler
Incredible and emotionally powerful, but I'm not sure I want to see again

Golden Globe Worthy

Incredible well-written film, with complex moral questions and a breathtakingly great performance by Streep
8. Burn After Reading
A smart and clever comedy that surprises at every turn.
9. Slumdog Millionaire
Good but not great due to the fact that the main character is a passive lump.
10. The Reader
Thought-provoking meditation on shame and the inability to forgive
11. Quantum of Solace
Riveting action sequences complimented by the most emotionally engaging Bond story ever

People's Choice Awards Worthy

Frothy fun with compelling characters and lots of drama.
13. Speed Racer
Fantastic visuals and awesome action sequences make for tons of fun.
14. The X-Files: I Want to Believe
A fantastic, nostalgic trip with a more thoughtful and pensive Mulder and Scully.
15. Cloverfield
Well-done and oddly compelling monster flick.
16. The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
    A rousing and emotionally-involving sequel.
17. Eagle Eye
Well-directed thriller weighed down by an implausible 2nd half.
18. Nights in Rodanthe
Despite clunky direction, the pic works thanks to a luminous performance by Diane Lane
19. Kung Fu Panda
Fun characters and colorful animation but pretty substance-free.

Razzie Award Worthy
20. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
A rather limp and relatively uninspired addition to the Indy franchise.
21. Fool's Gold
It's not bad, but it's not very good either.
