Power Rankings for 1/24/16
Best Picture
P/R Last C/R Film
1 3 92 The Big Short
The PGA win was big. No movie has won the PGA and lost Best Picture (unless you look at Gravity's tie with 12 Years a Slave) since the PGA and Academy went to the preferential ballot.
2 1 90 Spotlight
If Spotlight is going to make a comeback, it's going to need to win at SAG on Saturday. The Directors Guild seems out of reach, so it's its only chance.
3 2 85 The Revenant
The Revenant is not up for SAG and that's OK--SAG only has a 50/50 correspondence with Best Picture anyway. But Leo will have to win at SAG and Inarritu would have to somehow win the DGA a second year in a row. Not looking good for The Revenant after its kiss of death Globes win.
4 7 80 Room
Room's popularity with the public continues to astound me. It's lack of guild nominations will sink its ultimate Best picture hopes, however.
5 4 75 Mad Max
The DGA still seems within reach but if the movie was going to break through to the top prize it was going to have to succeed at PGA. It did not.
6 5 70 The Martian
Of the films without a Best Director nomination, The Martian is the only one that could really pull it off, but it won't happen. If the popular movie could not pull ahead at PGA, it's hard to see it doing it at the Oscars.
7 6 65 Bridge of Spies
A worthy contender in the 1990s, the time for movies like Bridge of Spies to win Best Picture have long passed us by.
8 8 50 Brooklyn
Brooklyn, a beautiful picture, was lucky to make it in, in my view. It will remain in last place all season long.
