Power Rankings for 1/14/16
Best Picture
P/R Last C/R Film
1 2 80 Spotlight
With the collapse of The Martian and the retreat of The Big Short, Spotlight has breathed a sigh of release and can see the finish line clear ahead.
2 5 79 The Revenant
It leads with 12 nods and nominated leaders often win, but I think the Academy will take a collective breath before rewarding the same filmmaker two years in a row.
3 1 70 The Big Short
Honestly, the subject matter of the Big Short (the comedic theme) will make it a distant third.
4 3 68 Mad Max
It dominated in tech and will win several, but I doubt it will win the top prize.
5 4 60 The Martian
The lack of a director nod basically doomed this movie's chances.
6 6 50 Bridge of Spies
Spielberg made it in, again. His last four movies are now Best Picture nominees, doubters be damned.
7 -- 40 Room
This was called by many, but my guilds/stats-minded predictions made no room for it. TIFF proves that it has staying power, still.
8 7 30 Brooklyn
Turns I was right about the top seven nominees--up to Brooklyn, and over estimated the power of Carol and Compton.
