Power Rankings for 1/13/16
Best Director
P/R Last C/R Person/Film
1 3 90 Todd McCarthy - Spotlight
This race is so tight it keeps changing, but watch the nominations for clues as to who is in for Best Picture. A miss for Spotlight here would end its Oscar run. The DGA nod helped.
2 -- 89 Adam McKay - The Big Short
Again, if the movie is as strong as people are guessing, the director has to find space here. Basically I'm picking the five DGA people, which is foolish. One will likely miss. Could the former director of Anchorman suffer at the hands of the snobby Directors Branch?
3 2 88 Ridley Scott - The Martian
The Globes win for his movie helps the perception that he's a contender, but will the snotty branch go for the popcorn flick? Could it be this DGA nominee that misses out?
4 1 87 George Miller - Mad Max
Mad Max helmer George Miller seems a safe bet, as the movie as more admired. The DGA nomination also proves that he's in, and likely safer than some of the other guys here.
5 4 86 Alejandro Gonzalez-Inarritu - The Revenant
The Director win for Inarritu at the Globes shows he's a contender, but it's not as guaranteed with Oscar. Of course, the DGA also boosted him, but Todd Haynes could make it in for Carol still...or will it be Spielberg to spoil the perfect 5/5 with the DGA?
