Power Rankings for 12/10/15
Best Picture
P/R Last C/R Film
1 1 90 Spotlight
What seemed a tight race one week ago now has Spotlight firmly in the lead. But, I think it is temporary. It had a SAG weakness (few acting nods) and a Globes one (NO acting nods). The lead is up for grabs
2 2 85 Carol
These two are unlikely to switch any time soon, even if the lack of a SAG nod is a big question mark for Carol. It did lead at the Globes, and critics continue to adore it. Look for it to make a play.
3 10 80 Mad Max
Last week, it was a three way tie between Spotlight, Carol, and The Martian as the sci-fi, crowd-pleasure. Mad Max has made a move to take that spot. The critics wins plus the Globes drama nod mean it is here to stay.
4 4 75 The Revenant
As word of mouth builds around this, I expect it will get in easily. Leo got in with SAG despite its late showing, and it scored 4 nods from the Globes in a mea culpa for their ignoring Birdman last year. The Revenant is in.
5 7 70 Brooklyn
Brooklyn is holding steady, but the competition is stiff and anything can happen. Still, if Saoirse is strong enough, she should be able to get the movie in. The lack of SAG and HFPA should have its people worried though.
6 -- 65 The Big Short
The strong performance of this movie with SAG and the Globes, and the long list of big names associated with it (Brad Pitt, producer), are making it a serious dark-horse contender.
7 6 60 Room
Here's another movies that could get in based on the strength of a performance, but a Best Picture win seems impossible now despite the Toronto win. Ignored mostly by SAG, the Golden Globes nominations did help its chances.
8 5 55 Joy
Joy is fading, for now, as pundits didn't like it. The audience remains to be seen. The Globes gave it the token Picture and Actress nods, but the 10 categories there make that suspect.
9 3 50 The Martian
Houston, we have a problem. As with director, the Martian did not have a good week overall. We shall soon see if this candidacy was fact or punditry fiction. With Fox pushing The Revenant and Joy alongside The Martian, one wonders at one point their publicist will cut bait. Still, the Globes gave it a life line.
10 -- 40 Beast of No Nation
Still a long shot, but the SAG nods gave it a boost that the Globes mostly took away. The last spot is up for grabs. It could be Creed or even Steve Jobs.
