Power Rankings for 12/3/15
Best Director
P/R Last C/R Person/Film
1 3 90 Ridley Scott - The Martian
Regardless of whether the movie wins it all, the "he's due" narrative is taking hold and may be unstoppable. He gave us the Best Picture winner Gladiator but lost the Director trophy. This may be his time.
2 4 85 Todd Haynes - Carol
But if someone deserving is also overdue and made a much more Academy-like movie (except for the whole lesbian thing) it is obviously Todd Haynes, who could become the first openly gay director to hold up this statuette.
3 1 80 Tom McCarthy - Spotlight
Spotlight isn't going to drop out of the top five any time soon.
4 9 75 Alejandro Gonzalez-Inarritu - The Revenant
After falling somewhat, last year's Best Director winner is back and seems poised to stay.
5 -- 50 Laslo Nemez - Son of Saul
I'm still expecting the branch to do something wild and artsy, and if it is not Fukunaga, then maybe it will be the Hungarian.
6 7 45 Steven Spielberg - Bridge of Spies
This movie is another one of those that is holding steady, which could prove valuable stamina in the end.
7 2 40 David O. Russell - Joy
In a show of how crowded this race is, Russell is way down, even down his movie, I have a hunch, will do well.
8 6 35 Lenny Abrahamson - Room
This is another movie that needs a shot in the arm to be reconsidered a serious Best Picture/Director contender.
9 10 30 Quentin Tarantino - The Hateful Eight
In reality, a screenplay nod may have to be his consolation prize.
10 8 20 Danny Boyle - Steve Jobs
The mighty keep falling. Danny likely won't make it back this year.
