Power Rankings for 2/6/14
Best Adapted Screenplay
P/R Last C/R Person/Film
1 1 85 John Ridley - 12 Years a Slave
The ineligibility of this script at the WGA awards makes the picture somewhat muddy, but as the movie remains a strong contender to win Best Picture, it stands to reason that the Academy will recognize its script, as it tends to.
2 5 60 Billy Ray - Captain Phillips
The biggest mover in all of our power rankings this week combined has to be Captain Phillips, which surprised most by winning the Adapted Screenplay award at the WGA. Sure, some of the other contenders in the Oscar race were not eligible, but its win cements it as a favorite of the writers' branch. Could this be enough to propel it to victory?
3 2 55 Richard Linklater & Julie Delpy & Ethan Hawke - Before Midnight
Buzz for the movie has all but stalled in recent days, and it's not looking like the Academy will award the trio an "entire trilogy" win in this category.
4 3 40 Terence Winter - The Wolf of Wall Street
Sufficient Academy voters will see a vote for this script as a vote for Belfort, enough to essentially doom this film's chances in this race.
5 4 30 Steve Coogan & Jeff Pope - Philomena
Well, the injustice we pointed out last week has been corrected--the guy who started in the remake of Around the World in 80 Days will not win a writing Oscar this year.
