American Hustle |

While American Hustle was perceived to be the favorite in the aftermath of the nominations announcement, the gap between first and second place is non-existent. To wit, our staff is evenly divided about who will prevail in the category. |

12 Years a Slave |

People love an underdog. The problem is that the favorite wins most of the time. That's the dilemma our staff faces as we debate which movie will win. Since American Hustle won the SAGs, we do not have a good reason to remove its frontrunner status...yet. |

Gravity |
| |
The Academy hates science fiction. Everybody who tracks the Oscars knows this. Still, Gravity maintained some semblance of relevance by tying for Best Film at the Producer's Guild Awards. Its odds are still slim but Gravity is meritorious. |

The Wolf of Wall Street |

Controversy sells. It does not curry favor with members of the Academy. Ask the kind folks who made Zero Dark Thirty if you doubt us. The Wolf of Wall Street will have to settle for being a blockbuster. |

We appreciate that a few of you may be giving us a puppy dog head tilt right now. Our logic is straightforward. With two borderline slam dunk wins in the acting categories, we suspect voters will think they have celebrated this film more than enough. As such, Best Picture is a reach. |

Captain Phillips |

We have officially reached the "no chance in Hell" portion of the ballot. Let's focus on the positive rather than mock. The next less than stellar movie that Paul Greengrass directs will be the first. |

Her |
| |
If a massive science fiction blockbuster like Gravity is unlikely to win, what are Her's odds? Hint: non-existent. Besides, the entire movie feels like the time Bender dated the Planet Express ship. Or the Lucy Liu bot. The Futurama folks really ought to sue. |

Philomena |

The Academy already gave Best Picture to a movie with a made up word last year. They won't do it again. Seriously, getting the Best Picture nomination was a win in and of itself for this project.
